Parents often have questions about how we figure your students music grade. Assessment in music happens in many ways; Teacher observation, individual and group rubric assessment, and pencil/paper tests. If you have any questions about your child's music grade please contact me.
I follow the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) & National Standards for Music Education strands when grading students in music. A link to these can be found at the bottom of this page.
Kindergarten Music Grades: Skills and Conduct
1= Student is unable to exhibit skill even with direct guidance. Additional instruction is needed.
2= Student exhibits skill with minimal guidance. Reinforcement is needed.
3= Student exhibits skills independently and consistently.
4= Student understanding goes beyond grade level expectation.

Grades 2-5 Music Grades
E= achievement is excellent/exceeds expectations (equivalent to an A++)
Student shows extra effort/work in music.
Student shows consistent independent mastery exceeding grade level expectations
Student makes accomplishments beyond expectation in music
Student has above-average grades on written work where appropriate
S= achievement is satisfactory (equivalent to an A / High B)
Student makes accomplishments appropriate for grade level in music
Student shows mastery of skills most of the time and meets expectation
Student satisfies 80% or more of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
Student has average grades on written work where appropriate
N= achievement needs improvement (equivalent to a C)
Student shows some mastery of skills but needs more practice to become efficient; reinforcement is needed
Student shows little or no effort in music
Student satisfies less than 70% of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
Student makes accomplishments below expectations for grade level in music
Student has below average grades on written work where appropriate
U stands for Unsatisfactory: the student shows little to no mastery of skills, student is unable to exhibit skill even with direct guidance
Skyward can often appear confusing to parents because of the way the numeric system records. How does this numeric system transfer in the final report card in Skyward?
100-90 = E
89 -75 = S
74 - below = N
